Dr. Siva Prasad is Faculty Member, Project E-QUAL, University of Hyderabad. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Anthropology in the same institution. He was formerly Head of the Department of Anthropology (April 2011-April 2014). He did his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Mysore (through the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore) under the supervision of the Late Prof. M.N. Srinivas. He has a teaching and research experience of more than 30 years.
He undertook more than 20 research projects of multi-disciplinary nature, including in the areas of irrigation, forestry, rural and tribal development, agriculture, public health, etc. These projects were funded by both national and international agencies.
Besides, he undertook several consultancy projects for various research institutions and organizations, including multilateral organizations like DFID, The World Bank, DANIDA, CIDA, UNDP, etc.
He worked as member for two Danish Missions in Karnataka (1989 and 2003) and as a Consultant for the National Commission for Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, Ministry of Social Justice, Government of India (2007-08). He was RBI Chair Professor at the Council for Social Development, Southern Regional Centre (CSD-SRC) during 2009-2011 and also the officiating Regional Director. Previously, he also worked as faculty in Mangalore University PG Department of Sociology, Institute for Command Studies and Irrigation Management, Bangalore, OM Consultants (India) Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore and ISEC, Bangalore.
He also conducted many training programmes for farmers, NGOs as well as research professionals.
He has organised and attended several national and international seminars and also presented papers. He has published papers in refereed journals, edited volumes and anthologies.
He is on the academic bodies of different research institutes, like the NIRD, CESS, etc., and Universities, and also on one of the Committees of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. He is a Core Committee Member for India-EU Project at the University of Hyderabad whose aim is to work towards improvement of quality of undergraduate education in India. He guided many Ph. D (8) and M. Phil (17) students. Currently, he has 9 Ph. D and 2 M. Phil students working under his supervision. The areas of research in which they were (and are) engaged in are entrepreneurship (including social entrepreneurship), displacement and rehabilitation, physically handicapped women, ecosystems study, self-help groups (SHGs) and microfinance, joint forest management, agrarian social structure after the emergence of aquaculture, agripreneurship, organisational development in industry, impact of tourism on Jarawas in A&N Islands, natural resources management and livelihood systems, role of NGOs in rural development, itinerant traders, gerontology, water management, and ecology and development.
